CHRISTIANITY AND POLITICS - Emmanuel Ariyo

It is a popular saying, especially in Nigeria that Politics is a dirty game. So people believe that a born again child of God should not be involved.  It is believed that nobody can succeed in politics unless he compromises his Christian faith, join them in their bribery and corruption, cultism and rituals etc. In fact many people believe that a man cannot survive politics without charm. Therefore many faithful christians who are gifted with leadership skills have been discouraged.
The implication of this is that, the political system of the Nations will be filled with evil and wicked men. In such situation, the Nations cannot avoid having wicked men in leadership positions. That's why the Nations are been administered qruelly and wickedly.
But on the underhand, if a matured Christian who has the fear of God at heart is in charge of the affairs of a nation, we won't be surprised to see justice prevail at every sector of that nation. So I am of the opinion that Christians should rise, and take up political responsibilities so as to deliver the Nations from the hands of the unjust men.
We need to realize that we live a faith life as children of God. We are the light of the world, light cannot be influenced by darkness. Darkness gives room for light to shine even brighter, so when a Christian is involved in politics,  he cannot be influenced or affected by the evil trending the political system, instead he will influence and change the system for good. Because greater is he that lives in him than he that is in politics. No charm or Devil can stop a child of God,  he cannot die unless he has fulfilled God's purpose. This should be our mentality and confession not discouragement and fear.
WHY WE NEED CHRISTIANS IN POLITICS
1) Only a righteous leader can exalt righteousness in a nation: The Bible says sin is a reproach but righteousness exalts a nation.  Going through the scriptures, we will find examples of righteous kings who destroyed the alters of strange gods,  executed righteousness. And as a result, God gave them victory over their enemies and the blessings came upon them. This is applicable to our world today, when a nation has an unrighteous leader, he cannot uphold righteousness and that means that there is an automatic reproach for such a nation.
2) Light cannot shine without darkness: Many Christians are of the opinion that Christians should not mix up with unbelievers, they want Christians to function within the confinement of believers. This mind set can be interpreted as shining light under a very bright sunlight, such light is not needed and cannot be appreciated. But when you shine a light in a dark environment, the light is appreciated and useful. Christians are the light of the world due to their good works. Master Jesus said that we should let our light shine before men,  that they may see our good works.  It simply means that we should go into every sector of the world system and shine even in their darkness. That is showing forth our good works in the mist of evil deeds. So the darkness in the political system of the Nations is an opportunity for believers to shine.
3) Bad governance affects both believers and non believers: It's time for everyone to begin to think on possible solution to the gross misconduct and mismanagement of the nation's resources. Reason been that the consequences doesn't spare anybody,  even the coming generations may not escape it. People are suffering, they struggle to get basic amenities necessary for comfort. The standard of living of millions of People especially in Nigeria and other African countries is very low. These bad leaders have made life unfair, uncomfortable and unbearable to many, due to maximum selfishness and corruption of the highest order.
Imagine we have a nation who has a matured Christian(matured in the sense that he can take a stand for God, he won't surrender to pressure) as the president, Senate president, speaker in the house of Representatives, inspector general of police, chief Judge, minister of works etc. Such a government is my dream. Justice will prevail, there will be no corruption, wealth will be evenly distributed and life becomes easy.
We pray for God's intervention in the affairs of the Nation, we must realize that God can't do anything without a man who surrenders himself to be agent of God at the helm of affairs. The Bible says the enerst expectations of creature awaits the manifestations of sons of God. The Nation is waiting for the deliverer, we as Christians are the answers to the prayer of many, we are the hope of many. Let's rise and shine, showing our good works that people may glorify God through us.
